Heleen Makkinga has worked after her first study for over ten years in commercial services. She worked as intercedent among others, account manager, communications trainer and project leader. In the evening she took painting classes. In 2000 she resigned and she started the five-year course at the Art Academy Leiden / Haarlem. Meanwhile she now is a teacher at the Academy itself.
The past seven years she has exhibited regularly, including at several galleries including Gallery Zone, the Zoutkeet gallery, Gallery De Leeuw and K + A gallery. She also has exhibited at companies and organizations in Holland , like the Han Fortmann Center (Nijmegen), the Evert House (Bodegraven), Unilever (Rotterdam) and Verdonck Dick Otten and Wiegerinck (VODW) in Leusden. She is also member of the artists Instock. She also works in assignment. For example, she has made four large panels painted for a laboratory in Leiden. Also, she painted sixteen murals commissioned by Unilever in Holland.
